Melting Crayons Experiment

This is example of the experiment we done to show that solids can change their state and turn into a liquid.

Materials:
  • Crayons
  • Thick paper or Bristol Board
  • Hair dryer
  • Markers or other writing tools
  • Crazy glue or hot glue gun
Procedure:
  •  Using crazy glue or a hot glue gun to stick the crayons you want to use at the top of the paper of choice
  • Use the hair dryer to melt the crayons
  • after you have melted the crayons to your liking, let the paper cool down, allowing the crayon wax to cool and harden.
  • while doing this activity, explain to the students what is happening along the way, and why this is connected to the unit.

I chose this experiment to show the students that with heat added to a solid, it will change its state into a liquid and run down the sheet. when the heat is taken away from the warm wax, it will solidify again turning back into a solid.
We had so much fun seeing the different colors run down the page and create art while learning an outcome!
